Police officials today are unveiling the newest additions to their fleet: four vehicles.
The cars will eventually replace the department's Cushman three-wheelers that are used for high visibility in dense settings, such as shopping centers and special events.
The Smart cars are decked out in police stripes and bar lights, and have added safety features that the three-wheelers don't, said Deputy Chief Ray Tubbs.
The Smart cars cost $14,000 each, compared to $32,000 for the three-wheelers.
"Based on a need to continue to be good stewards of public funding, as well as ensuring the safety of our officers on patrol, we looked for an alternative," Tubbs said.
The new cars will be assigned to each of the city's four police precincts, Tubbs said. The department will continue to use the existing three-wheelers, but will likely phase them out.
"The feedback from the officers has been tremendous," Tubbs said. |

| ummm. why would anyone pay $32,000 for one of those 3 wheeled thingys? that makes no sense at all. our VW didn't cost near that much. |
